When West Ham showed an interest in Edimilson Fernandes late on in the summer transfer window, the player couldn’t quite believe it.
‘Surprised’, as he puts it, the young attacking midfielder threw his Sion plans out the window when the offer came despite thinking he didn’t have the qualities to make it in the Premier League.
Fast forward a few months later and the 20-year-old is making regular appearances for the Hammers under Slaven Bilic, even scoring a decisive goal in the EFL Cup against Chelsea.
Speaking to Le Nouvelliste in Switzerland, the player opened his new London flat to the newspaper, and spoke about the current, as well as the future, where he sees himself maybe being managed by José Mourinho or Antonio Conte.
Now very comfortable in London, a city he describes as ‘magnificent’, Fernandes has big plans for his future, but first wants to show the world he has what it takes to make a name for himself in the Premier League with the Hammers.
He said: “I know I can do more, go higher, and why not go to a bigger club? It’s only by working hard at West Ham that I’m going to develop.”
Le Nouvelliste state that by ‘bigger club’ he is referring to Manchester (United) or Chelsea, suggesting those would be his preferences were he to have a choice in the future.
Of course, a lot has to happen before this dream becomes a reality, and becoming an undisputed starter in Slaven Bilic’s plans is a must, but the talent is there.
Considering Antonio Conte already knows all about him following that EFL Cup fourth round fixture, that only leaves the Manchester United manager to find out who he is.
With two games against Mourinho’s men in the coming week, there’s a strong chance he’ll already be keeping an eye on him.

In fairness to the lad he probably thought he was joining a top 5 team aiming to be champions league regulars,
not the shower of shit he is currently playing in.
The question we must all ask is how long Bilic gets - can we afford to give him the Christmas programme and then the transfer window or must the axe fall sooner

I prefer players with the Ilunga approach of playing well enough to get a long term contract and then to stop trying as soon as he'd earnt it.

Well if the club matches his ambition then we're all happy, aren't we.
This just strikes me as 'Footballer says something stupid shock horror'. If I recall, Carlton Cole said he was using us as a stepping stone when he first joined back in 2006, so I really wouldn't read too much in to it.

Don't trust journalists to impartially translate stuff without trying to make a story out of nothing.
Unfortunately, the interview's on a subscription bit of Nouvelliste, so I can't check what he actually said without buying access.

We're 17th so cant blame him. Good luck to the lad if it goes to plan we would have received a healthy profit and his great performances would have churned out a few wins
